We’ve hosted the Cajun Classic Tennis
Tournament since 1989 for people wheelchair bound. Men, women, children, beginners, experienced and professional
players participate. Each plays on their “level”. They use a special wheelchair designed for the sport.
They play singles and doubles. In the Open level prize money is awarded.
Our goal is to provide a weekend of athletic competition, sportsmanship, and socializing.
It lasts about 4 days and many of the players return year after year from around the world. We strive
to introduce the sport to as many as possible.
Our “all volunteer” organization gives men and women paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, and others
with mobility disabilities self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment through the sport of wheelchair tennis.
We reach those recently wheelchair bound to elite athletes preparing for the Paralympics.
In addition to the tournament we also host tennis clinics and support
wheelchair players by defraying costs to participate in other events by providing meals, transportation, equipment and/or
facilities.
History
A local tennis player, Jeanie Peabody, whose niece became a quadriplegic
following a car accident founded this organization. She wanted her niece to be involved in tennis and she began teaching
her the game. Over the years our tournament has grown to become an internationally sanctioned event where both professional
players and amateurs can come to participant in a competitive yet social event. The tournament includes quads, amputees,
those with birth defects, and a full range of mobility disabilities.
Some have always been wheelchair bound others are finding the sport after an accident. Every
wheelchair tennis athlete has a unique story about their personal life and tennis career. Some played tennis
before being wheelchair bound and some found the sport after.
Our draw of players now includes players from all over the world, men, women, teens, seniors
and all those in between. About 120 players are expected each year. One or more “tennis” wheelchairs
are awarded each year, donated by businesses or individuals.
